Adding your own lists of proxy servers
(this article applies to versions 2.52 and earlier; if you are running a later version, click here)

There are many websites with large lists of anonymous public proxy servers. You can easily add the proxies from such lists into the database of A4Proxy. You can either enter proxies individually, one by one, or process the whole list in one go.

Select the "Add Proxy" command in the Edit menu in A4Proxy. In the dialog box that will appear you can add individual proxies by entering their addresses and port numbers in the appropriate fields and pressing the Add button. You will need to enter the port after the name of the proxy, separating them with a colon (:).

All proxies will appear in the temporary list in the Add Proxy dialog box. When you have finished adding them, click OK. All proxies which are not in the master database will be added to it (you cannot add multiple entries for the proxies which are already in the database).

You must be connected to the Internet when you are adding proxies.

You can also import text files containing lists of proxies: press the "Add from file" button and you will be asked to pick up a file. The text file must contain proxies in the format

proxyaddress1:port
proxyaddress2:port
proxyaddress3:port
...

with only one proxy on a line.

In order to import text files with proxies, you should first create such a file, e.g. in the Windows Notepad (Windows Start button -> Programs -> Accessories -> Notepad). Note that the file must be "plain text", so you can't use MS Word .doc files (if you prefer to use Word, make sure that you save the file as "text"). Use your mouse to select all proxies on the web page containing the proxy list, copy to the clipboard (press CTRL+INSERT; or right-click the selected text and choose Copy from the context menu; or select Copy from the Edit menu of your web browser), then paste it to Notepad (SHIFT+INSERT; or right-click inside the Notepad window and select Paste from the context menu; or select Paste from the Edit menu in the Notepad). Save the result as a text file. Now select Add Proxy from the Edit menu in A4Proxy and click "Add from file..." button. Choose your text file. After the program imports all proxies, click OK. New proxies will be added to the master database.

Note that you must be connected to the Internet when you are adding proxies.

You may run into some exotic lists of proxies, where the proxy name (IP) and the port number are separated by some characters other than the colon. This is a rare situation but A4Proxy has some features for that too. In the Add Proxy dialog box you can see an input field at the bottom of the window, called "Proxy/Port Delimiter". Normally it contains just a colon, and it is that character that is used as a separator between the proxy name (or IP) and its port number. If your list uses a different separator (some other character or group of characters), you should edit the Delimiter field accordingly. Now A4Proxy will use your custom characters to recognize the IP and port of the proxies it imports from text files or those which you enter manually. (Don't forget to change it back to the colon, as most lists use that as the separator).
